When Lord Worm left Cryptopsy for the second time it was a complete shock. The band promised a concept album that would expand into two albums. This idea was dropped and the band was left with two options. Cryptopsy went ahead and picked the worst option for their career and it’s called The Unspoken King.
A few months ago the band released two new songs on their Myspace page. The reaction to these songs was overwhelming; no fan from Cryptopsy’s past liked what they heard. There were a few scene kids that loved the new material. Why? It sounded like everything else that had “core” at the end of their genre.
One of the original members and drummer, Flo Mounier, went ahead and wrote a response to all of the negative feedback. His answer was simple, The Unspoken King was an “experimental album” and “fans are in for a big surprise”. He wasn’t lying with his words. The addition of a new vocalist, Matt McGachy, and keyboardist, Maggie Durand, sealed the deal.
When the album starts out you will call me a liar. The sound is fast and as brutal as anything heard on None So Vile, which is considered to be the best Cryptopsy album by fans. After these 2 minutes and 12 seconds on this track you will start to hear what was heard on those tracks Cryptopsy posted on their Myspace page.
The bands newest vocalist, Matt McGachy, can get the job done if needed. His brutal death metal style vocals sound great on certain tracks, but weak on most of them. To make matters worse McGachy does the unthinkable, he uses clean vocals on most of the tracks on The Unspoken King.
Cryptopsy and clean vocals don’t go hand in hand. Ever single track that features clean vocals is a kick to the face to all of those Cryptopsy fans that stuck with the band during hard times. Matt McGachy’s clean vocals are a mix between Brandan Schieppati (Bleeding Through) and Jonathan Davis (Korn). Concert halls will be packed when Cryptopsy fans, all of which are the same kids that ruined modern day metal.
The Unspoken King as a whole sounds rehashed. From Alex Auburn’s guitar playing to Flo Mounier’s drumming, everything sounds like it was taken from past Cryptopsy albums. All of the songs old school fans enjoyed were taken and put through the “core” grinder. Mounier’s drumming is still good, but on this record it almost sounds like he was playing extremely fast just so he could pick up his paycheck.
Cryptopsy made a big ordeal about having a keyboardist in the band. I wish I could say Maggie Durand’s contributions to this album were good, but I can’t. She got the job for one reason. Women in metal bands sell right now. Since Cryptopsy is a full blown deathcore band now they needed a female to make scene kids mouths water.
Can somebody please tell me when Durand plays on her little keyboard? I can count on one hand the amount of times I heard her playing on her keyboard. It’s a joke. Thankfully Cryptopsy got a new promotional picture with Maggie Durand in it. Sweet a gothic chick in a metal band that is hot, better run out and buy this album at Hot Topic.
Final Verdict
When the time comes to buy this album you better listen to clips first. The Unspoken King will go down in history as the worst album in Cryptopsy’s history. Lord Worm was a God, Mike DiSalvo was tolerable and Matt McGachy is a joke. This album makes me so mad every time I listen to it. Don’t expect to see me at any Cryptopsy shows in the near future; this once great death metal band is dead to me.None so Vile remains to be my favourite album from them, I'll post it later.
